Interviewer: Hi Marcie, can you introduce yourself?

Marcie: My name is Marcie, my husband and I live in Cibola, Texas. My husband and I have owned a few homes and we never, ever knew that we could actually protest our taxes. We always just thought that it was just something that was written and you couldn’t challenge it.

Interviewer: What was it like for you when you would receive your annual property value assessments from the County? 

Marcie: When you open up any mail and when you look at that number, you’re talking about thousands of dollars that you’re paying towards property taxes, and then you started thinking, “Oh my goodness”, is there a way that I can save money? What can I do? I didn’t even know at the point being a homeowner that this was something that I had to pay, to be honest with you. It can feel a little bit scary there at first time. It was shocking. I had never protested my property taxes before. I didn’t even know that it was something possible that I could actually do that, that it was a right that I had.  No one gives you the manual when you’re buying a home. Interviewer:  How did you find out about Home Tax Shield?

Marcie: I found Home Tax Shield in a very unique way. I was asked to help on a project and as I did data research and found out a lot of things first, I was shocked that somebody actually offered a service that was fair. I didn’t even know I could protest my taxes. I began getting more encouraged because I thought, that’s money that I get to keep in my pocket and do other things with.

Interviewer:  Do you know how much money you’ve saved?

Marcie: No, I haven’t received my results. I was very, I’m actually excited when I do get my results because when I saw how much my home was valued at, versus what the taxes I was paying, there’s a huge discrepancy and it flagged it. And it tells you, your property is valued at X, Y, Z. And this is what you’re paying. We, my husband and I are so thrilled. I’m like literally on a countdown to see what the difference will be. I’m very excited to see how much money I’m going to save on the tax assessor’s office actually sent me the statement and said, this is the amount that the property is valued at. When we walk around and we did data research, we see that the property that we own is nowhere near what the tax assessors has it as. So I’m truly excited and I cannot wait to see what the results are of that.

Interviewer: How was the process of signing up?

Marcie: When we went to go look at the process of how to protests our property taxes, they literally give you on the website, depending on which County you’re in a whole list of items that you’ll need to present. So you have go in search of photos, any cracks in any issues that you’re having in your home. Let’s just say, for example, you take all that and you have to submit paperwork. I have a very busy schedule. I’m not even available to even looking for anything. My schedule is planned out every single day and I don’t have time for it. And honestly, my personal opinion is if I can pay somebody to do it for me, it’s even better because that’s one less thing that I personally have to worry about or carry on my plate.

The process is so simple. It’s mind blowing, to be honest with you. I registered in, put in my name where I lived and that was probably, as far as that goes, I don’t have to dig for anything. I clicked a button and less than a minute, boom, saving money.

Interviewer: So, do you think you will get a fair tax value?

Marcie: We don’t have a say when it comes to how much our home is valued at some random person comes in, looks at your house, and says, your home is valued at X, Y, Z. You never have a say. So, your property taxes are based on what that individual is saying. You live in your home, you know what, everything in your home costs in the value of it. So they’re saying it’s a certain amount and I’m saying, it’s not because it’s got all these issues with it. I have no control over that, and I have to pay the property taxes based on what this person who, doesn’t really have a lot of knowledge of the home, says and I never knew that. I could say, wait a minute. I think you’re crazy. I wanted something fair. I don’t mind paying property taxes. I don’t want to overpay. I just want what’s fair.
